Irregular Verbs | Most Frequently Used List and Exercises

English past verbs have two forms: regular verbs and irregular verbs. We form regular verbs by putting “d” or “ed” at the end of the present verbs. As for irregular verbs, we have to memorize them. Therefore, we provide you with the list of irregular verbs below.

Irregular Verbs in Simple Past Examples

  1. I went to the mosque last night.
  2. She taught English when she was young.
  3. My mother made our favorite cake last Sunday.
  4. She was here this morning.
  5. The bus came late.
  6. The boy saw a small creature outside the window.
  7. Two weeks ago I read my termination letter sadly. But, now I’m okay.
  8. He threw the ball to Ben. And, Ben scored again.
  9. Paul sang Let It Be so beautifully that a lot of people clapped their hands.
  10. He found it under the table.
  11. I didn’t go to school yesterday.
  12. Why did you come late?

 

Irregular Verbs in Present Perfect Examples as Past Participle Verbs

  1. Have you ever seen a nebula?
  2. I have just written my application letter. I need a new job.
  3. He has brought new  optimism.
  4. Has the baby slept?
  5. Most people in the country have chosen him a president.
  6. Have you understood her explanation?
  7. How long have you known him, Honey?
  8. I have met him twice.
  9. The general has withdrawn all the troops from the country.
  10. She has torn my heart apart.
  11. He hasn’t read the news.

Past Simple Exercises | Irregular Verbs

Exercise I

Choose the correct verb in parentheses.

  1. My sister (makes, make, made) a beautiful kite yesterday.
  2. Did you (go, went, goes) to school on foot this morning?
  3. When I was young, I often (see, saw, seen) scary faces on the ceiling.
  4. My father (flies, flew, flown) to Dublin last week.
  5. I (write, wrote, written) my resignation letter last night.
  6. The band (sings, sang, sung) 12 songs and everybody enjoyed the show.
  7. When did you (buy, bought, buys) this car?

Exercise II

Imagine you were late to school. Ask and answer with your partner. Try to use irregular verbs.
