Subject Pronouns

Subject pronouns are personal pronouns that are used as  a grammatical Subject in a sentence. Let’s see the following examples.

  • I love cooking
  • You like eating.
  • She is my girlfriend.
  • My father is tall and dark. He loves travelling very much.
  • We really want to go to Iceland.
  • They will help us.
  • We live in a beautiful small house. It has only two bedrooms.

Subject Pronouns And Object Pronouns

When we use a personal pronoun in a sentence, we have to make sure we use the correct form of the pronouns, the subject pronouns or object. The subject is the person/animal/thing that does the action. On the contrary, the object is the person/animal/thing that receives the action. Let’s the following examples:

Subject Pronouns and Object Pronouns Examples

  • I like this house. (I = subject)
  • She wants the house. (she = subject)
  • We must buy the house. (we = subject)
  • My wife wanted me to buy the house. (me = object)
  • I told her I liked the house.
  • The property agent wanted us to buy the house. (us = object)

Exercise I

Choose the right pronoun in the bracket to complete the sentences.
  1. “I love you. Do you love (I, me)?”  “A lot.”
  2. Jane is a hard-working mother.  (She, Her) works ten hours a day.
  3. (We, Us) have to serve our people well.
  4. Those people came here to work together with us. (They, Them) are interested in our culture.
  5. The man on the street looks confused. Do you know (he, him) ?
  6. Why didn’t (she, her) call you last night?
  7. Can (they, them) come to the meeting tomorrow?
  8. Do you want (we, us) to invite all of the managers?
  9. I never expect (he, him) to understand me.
  10. Please help (I, me). I’m lost.

Exercise II

Answer the question below. Try to use subject and object pronouns in your answer.

  1. What are you going to do if you see people ignore traffic lights?
  2. What are you going to do if you see a small kid crying on the street?
  3. If someone hurts you, what will you do?
  4. If you see two boys fighting, what will you do?
  5. Suppose you and some of your friends are lost in the jungles, what will you do?

Different answers are possible.

  1. I’m going to remind them to obey the rules.
  2. I’m going to ask him/her why and offer help.
  3. It is highly possible I will hurt him/her back.
  4. I will stop them.
  5. I will call the police and ask them to help us.
