Verbs Followed By To Infinitive Exercises and Answers

In this episode we are going to talk about “verbs followed By To Infinitive”. A lot of verbs in English have different pattern and use. Some of them must be followed by gerund and some others must be followed by to infinitive.

Verbs Followed By To Infinitive List

If the verbs below are followed by another verb, the following verb must be to +  infinitive.

  1. afford
  2. agree
  3. appear
  4. arrange
  5. attempt
  6. dare
  7. decide
  8. fail
  9. forget ( It can also be followed by -ing verb with different meaning )
  10. hope
  11. learn
  12. manage
  13. offer
  14. plan
  15. pretend
  16. promise
  17. refuse
  18. seem
  19. tend
  20. threat
  21. want
Let’s see the following examples :
  • I decided to leave her because I saw her with another man.
  • We plan to buy a house next year.
  • Our supervisor tends to talk too much.
  • I want to hold your hand.
  • The baby learns to walk every day.
  • Cats seems to understand human in some ways.
  • I hope to see you again.
  • He promised to marry me but it’s a lie.
  • Don’t forget to lock the door, Honey.
  • The thief refused to give in.

Verbs Followed by To Infinitive Exercises

Exercise I

In this exercise, you have to complete the sentences with a suitable verb.
            buy         lock        give       speak       play        cook
  1. The burglar got into my house. I forgot ……………the window.
  2. I’d like to learn …………. Spanish.
  3. I want …………. a new car.
  4. We’ve arranged ……………… football tomorrow afternoon.
  5. My father promised ………….. a surprising birthday present.

Exercise II

Answer the following questions.

  1. What do you plan to do at the end of the year?
  2. Why do you think some people refuse to follow health protocols?
  3. What do you think of the people who avoid paying his debt?
  4. Mention 5 things you want to share with your mother?
  5. Have you ever promised to do something? Did you do or break it?

Exercise I

  1. The burglar got into my house I forgot to lock the window.
  2. I’d like to learn to speak Spanish.
  3. I want to buy a new car.
  4. We’ve arranged to play football tomorrow afternoon.
  5. My father promised to give a surprising birthday present.

Exercise II

Different answers are possible.

  1. I plan to stay home.
  2. They refuse to follow them because they don’t understand the risk.
  3. I think people who avoid paying his debt are irresponsible and immature.
  4. First, I want to have meals together more often. Also, I want to travel with her. Besides, I want to talk with her more. On top of that, I want to share the same house with her. Finally, I want share happiness with her.
  5. Yes, I have. I promised to marry someone but I didn’t.
