In this episode we are going to talk about “Verbs Followed by Gerund”. As we may already know, some verbs must be followed by to infinitive. And, some others can be followed by gerund or to infinitive. But, this time we are going to focus only on the verbs that must be followed by gerund. Let’s begin the discussion with the meaning or definition of gerund.
A gerund is a noun made by adding “ing” at the end of the verb. So, a gerund is a noun. But the noun is from a verb. Let’s see the following examples :

The followings are the verbs that must be followed by gerund:
admit | avoid | consider | delay | deny | enjoy | fancy |

stop | suggest | finish | risk |

- Stop making noise!
- Avoid eating too much fat!
- Have you finished making your bed?
- The children enjoy swimming in the pool.
- The man denied stealing the diamond.

Answer the following questions. Try to use gerund in your sentences.
- Have you ever postponed doing something until you forgot to do it? Can you describe it.
- Do you have something you want to stop doing but you’ve always failed to do it? Please tell us about it.
- Have you ever denied doing something wrong? What was it?
- What was the latest thing you regretted doing? Why?
- What is the activity you mostly imagine doing? Why?

Exercise II
Different answers are possible.
- Yes, I have. One day I postponed calling my best friend to tell him a very important news. I forgot to do it and it really hurt him.
- Yes, I do. I want to stop smoking but I’ve always failed. A lot of my friends smoke so I start to smoke again.
- Yes, I denied cheating in my exam.
- I regretted not helping my best friend. It was so hard to help him but I should have tried to help him in any way.
- I often imagine going to beautiful beaches and swimming at sea.
