Active Passive Voice Exercises with Answers

This time we are going to talk a little bit about active passive voice. We use active voice for a reason. Likewise, we use passive voice for a reason. Check the next section to understand why we use different voices.

Active Passive Voice Table

 

We usually use a passive sentence for the following reasons:
It is not important who or what did the action. Example: This castle was built in 1555.
We want to highlight who or what did the action so that we put the actor at the end of the sentence preceded by “by”. Example : This house was built by my grandfather.

 

Active Passive Voice: Different To Be

In passive sentences we use different form of to be ( is, am, are, was, were, be, been ) followed by verb III ( the past participle ).  It depends on the tense used in the sentence.  Let’s see the following examples :
  1. I am invited to the meeting.
  2. The floor has just been mopped.
  3. The house is being built.
  4. The car was totally damaged.
  5. This thing can be removed.
  6. This laptop has to be upgraded.

Active Passive Voice in Present Tense (Simple/Progressive)

Active Sentences
Passive Sentences
She  mops the floor every day.
They do not provide courtesy buses anymore.
He is painting the house.
We always welcome you.
The floor is mopped every day.
Courtesy buses are not provided anymore.
The house is being painted.
 You are always welcome.

 

 Active Passive Voice in Past Tense (Simple / Progressive)

She wrote a letter last night.
I invited John and Grace to the party.
She didn’t invite me to the party.
My brother was cleaning the house when I came home.
They were cutting the trees when the police came.
A letter was written last night.
John and Grace were invited to the party.
I was not invited to the party.
The house was being cleaned when I came home.
The trees were being cut when the police came.

Active Passive Voice in Present Perfect Tense (Simple/Progressive)

I have fulfilled the requirements.

Active Passive Voice in The Past Perfect Tense

Active Passive Voice with Modals

Passive Voice with Modal + have + Past Participle

I should have told her.
Somebody must have stolen my bike.

Passive with To Infinitive

  1. This problem has to be solved as soon as possible.
  2. She wanted to be left alone.

Passive with Get

  1. My sister got offered the job. (=My sister was offered the job.)
  2. Three soldiers got killed. (=Three soldiers were killed.)

Determining To Be

Complete the passive sentences using the correct to be (is, am, are, be, was, were, been).
  1. I told the hotel receptionist I wanted to ….. woken up at 6.00.

Changing Active Into Passive Sentence Exercise

Change the sentences into passive.

Present Continuous Tense Changing Active to Passive

  6. She is coloring the singer’s hair.

Past Simple Tense Changing Active to Passive

Change the following active Past Simple Tense sentences into passive.
