ordinal cardinal numbers

There are two kinds of numbers in English. We call them ordinal and cardinal number. They are not interchangeable. We use these numbers to count something, to say our age, to tell the date etc. Let’s see these two kinds of numbers and their use in our daily life: ordinal cardinal numbers.

Cardinal numbers are used to count things, while ordinal numbers are used to show the order or position of something in a sequence.

  • Cardinal numbers: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, etc.
  • Ordinal numbers: First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, etc.

For example, you would use a cardinal number to say “I have three apples.” But you would use an ordinal number to say “He is the first person to finish the race.”
