Our topic for today is Relative Pronouns & Clauses. Relative pronouns are pronouns used to mark relative clauses. We use a relative clause when we want to tell others which person or things we mean. We want to specify the person or thing we are talking about.

Relative Pronouns | Who
We use who before a relative clause when we are talking about people. We use who instead of she/he/they. Let’s see the following examples.
- I like a girl who can cook.
- The man who lives next door is my uncle.
- I know a lot of people who live in Tanjungsiang.
- A nurse is a person who looks after patients.
- Where is the girl who sent you the message?
Relative Pronouns | Whom
We use whom before a relative clause when we are talking about people as an object. Let’s see the following examples.
- The girl whom you like is my sister.
- Who is the man whom you talked to last night?
- I will never forget the girl whom my mother hates very much.
Relative Pronouns | That
We use that before a relative clause when we are talking about things or people. Let’s see the following examples.
- I like houses that have large backyard. ( things )
- The car that was stolen has been found by the police. ( things )
- My sister works for a company that makes laptops. ( things )
- The police are chasing the men that stole the car. ( people )
- I’m looking for the girl that I always miss every day. ( people )
Relative Pronouns | Which
We use which before a relative clause when we are talking about things only.
Let’s see the following examples.
- I cannot find the books which I put in my room.
- She kept all the letters which you sent
Relative Pronouns | Whose
We use whose before a relative clause when we are talking about people’s ownership. Let’s see the following examples.
- I am seeing the girl whose brother is my classmate.
- He’s going to marry a woman whose husband is dead.
- The old man whose hair is gray is my grandfather.
Relative Pronouns | Where
We use where before a relative clause when we are talking about places. Let’s see the following examples.
- I’m going back to the town where I was born.
- He doesn’t know where his girlfriend lives.
- Paris is the place where millions of tourists go to every year.

In this exercise you have to complete the sentences with the who, whom, that, which, whose, where.

- The man … car you borrowed yesterday is my brother.
