There are a few tenses in English to describe actions in the future.
In this episode we are going to talk about going to future. Let’s start with its functions.
Going to is used when we say what we have already decided to do in the future. Let’s see the following examples:
Going to is also used to say what we think will happen. We are usually sure something is going to happen because of the present situation we see. Let’s see the following examples :
We can use going to or will to express a prediction. But, we can only use going to to express a prior plan. On the contrary, we can only use will to express willingness or sudden decision.
Examples:
It’s cloudy. It’s going to rain. or It’ll rain.
A: “Are you busy this Saturday night?”
B: “Yes. I’m going to see my best friend.” We cannot say: “I will see my best friend.” because you have made a decision before speaking.
A: “Someone’s knocking at the door.”
B: “I’ll open the door.” We cannot say: “I’m going to open the door.” because he just express his willingness or a sudden decision. He hasn’t made a plan to open the door.
